Before Barry Sanders won the 1988 Heisman Trophy and put up the most insane statistical season in college football history, he was the backup running back at Oklahoma State — playing behind Thurman Thomas. And Thurman Thomas was no slouch. Thomas rushed for 1,613 yards in 1987, earned All-American honors, and was the unquestioned heart of the Cowboys' offense. Sanders carried the ball on change-of-pace plays and returned kicks, watching and learning behind one of the best backs in the country. When Thomas left for the NFL after the 1987 season, Sanders stepped into the starting role and the rest is history — 2,628 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns in a single season. But in 1987, they were in the same backfield in Stillwater, and the Cowboys had two future Pro Football Hall of Famers sharing carries. Think about that. Two Hall of Famers. Same backfield.
