The Hawaiians were the most unique franchise in World Football League history — and arguably in all of professional football. The Hawaiians were one of the league's few financially stable franchises and featured legitimate NFL talent, including former Dallas Cowboys star running back Calvin Hill. After a rough 1-7 start in 1974, the team rallied to finish 9-11 and made the playoffs, defeating the Southern California Sun before falling to the eventual champion Birmingham Americans. Home games were played on Sunday afternoons, which meant visiting teams had to fly to paradise after playing just four days earlier — a built-in competitive advantage that made Honolulu one of the toughest road trips in the league.
