The Shreveport Steamer are one of the most colorful stories in World Football League history. The franchise began the 1974 season as the Houston Texans, but when financial problems made staying in the shadow of the NFL's Oilers impossible, the team packed up and relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana midseason, rebranding as the Steamer. Playing at Independence Stadium, the Steamer gave northwest Louisiana its only taste of major league professional football and gave fans in the Bayou State something to cheer about on Wednesday nights. The team featured Willie Wood as an assistant coach — one of the most respected names in football history from his days with the Green Bay Packers. Despite the instability of starting life as a relocated franchise, the Steamer finished out the 1974 season and returned for the WFL's 1975 campaign before the league collapsed in October. The financial struggles that plagued the entire WFL hit the Steamer hard — head coach Marshall Taylor was forced to double as general manager and slash the payroll just to keep the lights on.
