The St. Louis Stars were one of the Negro National League's most dominant franchises during the golden age of Black baseball in the 1920s and early 1930s. Playing at Stars Park — one of the few Black-owned baseball stadiums in the country — the Stars won three Negro National League pennants in 1928, 1930, and 1931 behind a roster loaded with Hall of Fame talent. Cool Papa Bell, widely regarded as the fastest man ever to play baseball, terrorized opposing pitchers and baserunners from center field. Mule Suttles brought devastating power from the left side, launching towering home runs that made him one of the most feared sluggers in the Negro Leagues. Willie Wells was a brilliant shortstop whose slick fielding and consistent bat earned him a place among the greatest players of his era. All three are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The Stars gave St. Louis's Black community a championship franchise to rally around during some of the most challenging years in American history.
