Pohl & Leopold '02 - Minnesota Hockey Retro Campaign T-Shirt - Hyper Than Hype

The Captain and the Hobey. Johnny Pohl and Jordan Leopold arrived at the University of Minnesota as freshmen together, endured losing seasons together, and as senior co-captains in 2002, they brought the NCAA hockey championship back to the State of Hockey for the first time since 1979. Leopold won the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey — a two-time All-American defenseman who could rush the puck, quarterback the power play, and shut down the opposition's top line. Pohl was the offensive engine — Minnesota's Mr. Hockey out of Red Wing who led the Gophers in scoring with 79 points and buried the biggest goals of the season with a lethal wrist shot from the left circle. In the national championship game against Maine at the Xcel Energy Center, the Gophers trailed with under a minute to play, forced overtime, and won it on Grant Potulny's power-play goal — assisted by both Pohl and Leopold. The building shook. The trophy came home. Pohl wore the C on the road, Leopold wore it at home, and together they captained one of the greatest teams in Golden Gopher history.
