The Philadelphia Stars were one of the Negro National League's proudest franchises, representing Philadelphia's Black community from 1933 to 1952. Founded by Ed Bolden and backed by sports promoter Eddie Gottlieb, the Stars won the Negro National League pennant in their very first league season in 1934, led by 20-year-old fireballing lefty Slim Jones. The roster featured Hall of Famers Biz Mackey behind the plate and Jud Wilson swinging one of the most feared bats in all of Black baseball — Wilson hit over .400 three times during his career. The Stars called Penmar Park at 44th and Parkside in West Philadelphia home, and they packed Shibe Park on Monday nights when the Athletics and Phillies hit the road. Gene Benson, Mahlon Duckett, Bill Cash, and Stanley Glenn all came up through Philly's sandlots to wear the red and navy blue, giving the Stars a deep connection to the local community.
