Matt Cavanaugh was the quarterback steering the ship, the guy who took over under center and earned MVP honors in the Sugar Bowl that sealed it. Together they delivered the 1976 national championship, the last one the Panthers have hoisted capped by a New Year's Day win in New Orleans. Fifty years on, Pitt Panthers fans in the Steel City still talk about that backfield like it happened last fall. Hail to Pitt.
