The Indianapolis Racers brought major league hockey to the Hoosier State as members of the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1978. Playing at the brand-new Market Square Arena, the Racers won the WHA's Eastern Division championship in 1975-76 under coach Jacques Demers and swept the Cincinnati Stingers in the 1977 playoffs after winning the longest postseason game in WHA history — a triple-overtime thriller on Gene Peacosh's goal. The Racers led the entire WHA in attendance during the 1976-77 season, proving Indianapolis was a legitimate hockey town. Their roster featured Hockey Hall of Famers Dave Keon and Mark Messier, along with Pat Stapleton and Michel Dion. And then there was the 17-year-old kid named Wayne Gretzky, who signed one of the largest contracts in hockey history and played his first eight professional games as a Racer before being sold to Edmonton. Financial turmoil cut the franchise short, but the Racers left an unforgettable mark on Indiana sports history.
