The Indianapolis ABCs are one of the most historically significant teams in Negro League baseball history. Originally organized in 1907 by the American Brewing Company, the ABCs became a powerhouse under manager C.I. Taylor, who stocked the roster with future Hall of Famers Oscar Charleston and Ben Taylor in the mid-1910s. Charleston — nicknamed "The Hoosier Comet" — was a five-tool sensation often considered the greatest player in Negro League history, and the ABCs claimed the western Black baseball championship in both 1915 and 1916. Washington Park in Indianapolis hosted the very first Negro National League game on May 2, 1920, when 6,000 fans watched the ABCs defeat the Chicago Giants 4-2. Hall of Fame catcher Biz Mackey also suited up for the ABCs during their time as charter members of the NNL. Even Madam C.J. Walker was a devoted fan in the stands.
