The Blond Bomber and Bird. Bob Fenimore was the most dominant player in college football in 1945 — leading the nation in both rushing and total offense while also playing safety, punting, and doing just about everything else Jim Lookabaugh asked of him. They called him the Blond Bomber, and he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Army's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis. Neill Armstrong was his best friend and his favorite target — a two-time national leader in receiving who called all the plays from his end position and wore Fenimore out with touches because he knew the Bomber would deliver every time. They enrolled at Oklahoma A&M on the same day, became roommates, and shook hands before every kickoff. The 1945 Aggies went 9-0, won the Missouri Valley Conference, crushed Saint Mary's 33-13 in the Sugar Bowl, and were retroactively awarded the national championship. Both were All-Americans. Fenimore was the first overall pick in the 1947 NFL Draft. They stayed friends for life.
