The Coach and the Freshman Phenom. Vince Dooley built the Georgia Bulldogs into an SEC powerhouse over 25 years, but the 1980 season was his masterpiece. Herschel Walker arrived in Athens as an 18-year-old freshman from Wrightsville, Georgia, and from his very first carry — a 16-yard touchdown run against Tennessee in the opener — everybody in college football knew the game had changed. Walker ran for 1,616 yards as a freshman, bulldozing defenders with a combination of speed, power, and fearlessness that the sport had never seen in a first-year player. Dooley's Dawgs went 12-0, beat Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl, and claimed Georgia's first national championship since 1942. Walker went on to win the 1982 Heisman Trophy and finish his career as one of the greatest running backs in football history, but it was that 1980 freshman season — running between the hedges at Sanford Stadium with Dooley calling the shots — that started the legend.
