The Detroit Wheels had one of the roughest rides of any franchise in World Football League history — and that's saying something in a league full of rough rides. Playing at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac during the 1974 season, the Wheels were the WFL's hard-luck franchise from day one. The team finished a dismal 1-13 before having their season suspended and the franchise disbanded after fourteen games. Things got so bad in the Motor City that the Wheels' home game against the Portland Storm was moved across the border to London, Ontario — one of only two WFL games played outside the United States. Players went weeks without paychecks, facilities were substandard, and the on-field product suffered from constant roster upheaval. Despite it all, the Wheels represented one of the WFL's most ambitious gambles — putting a team in the backyard of the NFL's Lions in one of America's great sports cities. The franchise folded along with the Jacksonville Sharks in October 1974, and Detroit wouldn't see another alternative football league team for years.
