The Detroit Stars were one of the most talent-rich franchises in Negro League baseball history. Founded in 1919 by Tenny Blount with help from Rube Foster — the "Father of Black Baseball" — the Stars became charter members of the Negro National League in 1920 and posted winning records in nearly every season of their existence. The crown jewel was Hall of Famer Turkey Stearnes, a five-tool center fielder who won six home run titles and was called by Satchel Paige "one of the greatest hitters we ever had." Hall of Fame southpaw Andy Cooper anchored the pitching staff with over 120 Negro League victories, while Hall of Famers Pete Hill, José Méndez, and Bruce Petway all suited up for Detroit in those early years. The Stars played at historic Mack Park on Detroit's East Side, where they regularly drew packed crowds and even won the city's prestigious semi-pro championship against top white teams throughout the 1920s.
