The Detroit Cougars were the franchise that brought NHL hockey to the Motor City. Founded in 1926, the team purchased the roster of the Victoria Cougars — who had won the Stanley Cup just one year earlier — and adopted their namesake. With no arena ready in Detroit, the Cougars spent their entire inaugural season playing across the border at the Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario. The 1927-28 season brought two seismic changes: the opening of the magnificent Detroit Olympia and the arrival of Jack Adams behind the bench, beginning a 36-year run as the face of the franchise. Carson Cooper led the Cougars to their first Stanley Cup playoff appearance in 1929, and captain Reg Noble anchored the blue line during those formative years. Financial hardship eventually forced a name change to the Falcons in 1930 and then the Red Wings in 1932 under new owner James Norris — but every one of those eleven Stanley Cup banners traces its roots back to the Cougars.
