The Dallas Black Giants were Texas Negro League baseball at its loudest, fastest, and most electrifying. From 1908 all the way through 1949, the Black Giants barnstormed across the South, packed Gardner Park in Oak Cliff, and played a brand of ball that had fans riding the streetcar across the Trinity River just to see them go. Live jazz blasted between innings. Beauty contests lit up the stands in the 1930s. On the field, the Black Giants played aggressive, scrappy baseball — stealing bases, running first-to-third on singles, keeping defenses on their heels every pitch. The rivalry with the Fort Worth Black Panthers drew nearly 6,000 fans to a single game. And the last great Black Giants squad, in 1949, featured a teenage second baseman from Booker T. Washington High School named Ernie Banks — Mr. Cub himself — getting his first taste of professional ball before heading to the Kansas City Monarchs and then on to immortality in Chicago.
