The Cleveland Crusaders were a charter member of the World Hockey Association and one of the league's most competitive franchises during their four seasons in Northeast Ohio from 1972 to 1976. Playing at the Cleveland Arena and later the Richfield Coliseum, the Crusaders brought big-time professional hockey to a city hungry for it and rewarded fans with playoff appearances in three of their four seasons. The roster featured tough, talented players like Gerry Cheevers — the legendary goaltender who left the Boston Bruins to backstop the Crusaders and brought his famous stitched mask to Cleveland. Paul Shmyr anchored the blue line, while Gary Jarrett provided offensive punch up front. The Crusaders drew solid crowds and built a loyal fanbase, but ownership struggles eventually forced the franchise to relocate to Minnesota as the Fighting Saints for the 1976-77 season. Cleveland wouldn't see professional hockey again until the NHL's Barons arrived briefly in 1976.
