The Cleveland Buckeyes were one of the Negro American League's premier franchises during the 1940s, culminating in a Negro League World Series championship in 1945. Slugging outfielder Sam Jethroe patrolled center field for the Buckeyes before becoming the National League Rookie of the Year with the Boston Braves in 1950. The Buckeyes also won the Negro American League pennant in 1947, proving their championship run was no fluke. The franchise eventually merged with the Jacksonville Eagles as the Negro Leagues declined following the integration of Major League Baseball.
