The Cincinnati Tigers hold a special place in Queen City sports history as the city's Negro League professional baseball team. Founded in 1934 by DeHart Hubbard — the first African American to win an individual Olympic gold medal, capturing the long jump at the 1924 Paris Games — the Tigers gave Cincinnati's Black community a team to call their own. Wearing hand-me-down Cincinnati Reds uniforms, the Tigers played their home games at Crosley Field and drew as many as 15,000 fans to the ballpark. In 1937, the Tigers became charter members of the Negro American League, elevating the club to major league status. Players like Howard Easterling, Jesse Houston, and pitcher-turned-manager Dizzy Dismukes gave the Tigers a competitive roster, and many of the team's original players came from the city's beloved Black amateur club, the Excelsiors. The Tigers folded after the 1937 season, with many of their players joining the Memphis Red Sox.
