The Chicago Winds were the World Football League's second attempt at professional football in the Windy City, replacing the Chicago Fire for the league's ill-fated 1975 season. Playing at Soldier Field — the same venue as the NFL's mighty Bears — the Winds faced an uphill battle from the moment they kicked off. The original Chicago Fire had actually shown promise in 1974, averaging 27,000 fans per game, but the reconstituted Winds under new owner Eugene Pullano couldn't recapture that momentum. The team signed former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl receiver John Gilliam as its marquee attraction, but Gilliam and quarterback Pete Beathard both eventually abandoned the sinking ship and returned to the NFL. The Winds played just two home games at Soldier Field, drawing barely 5,000 fans per contest, before the franchise was revoked on September 2, 1975 — making the Winds one of the shortest-lived teams in professional football history.
