The Chicago Cougars were the World Hockey Association's bold attempt to challenge the mighty Blackhawks for the hearts of hockey fans in the Windy City. Future NHL stars like Dave Dryden in net and Rick Morris on the wing gave the Cougars a competitive roster, but they could never overcome the Blackhawks' stranglehold on the Chicago market. Attendance lagged despite the on-ice product, and after three seasons the franchise folded, unable to sustain the financial fight against an Original Six juggernaut. The Cougars remain a fascinating footnote in Chicago hockey history.
