From 1940 to 1946, Beck Shepherd's scrappy Negro Southern League club played out of Engel Stadium and barnstormed across the South, giving Black ballplayers in Chattanooga a diamond to call their own during the height of segregation. And then there's this — a teenage outfielder named Willie Mays played for the Choo-Choos in 1945 and 1946, before heading to the Birmingham Black Barons and eventually becoming the Say Hey Kid, the greatest all-around player baseball has ever seen. Shepherd discovered him, saw the raw brilliance in that swing and those legs, and gave him his first taste of professional ball. The Choo-Choos folded when the money ran out, but their place in Tennessee baseball history is carved in stone.
