The Calgary Broncos are one of professional hockey's great "what if" stories. Founded on November 1, 1971, by Calgary businessman and hockey devotee Bob Brownridge, the Broncos were one of the World Hockey Association's original twelve charter franchises. The WHA envisioned a fierce Alberta rivalry between the Broncos and the Edmonton Oilers that would have electrified Western Canada. The Broncos even participated in the 1972 WHA General Player Draft, selecting players like Barry Gibbs, Jim Harrison, Dale Hoganson, and Jack Norris. But tragedy struck when Brownridge fell ill with cancer and passed away, leaving the franchise without its driving force. Unable to meet its financial obligations to the league, the Broncos folded before ever playing a single game, and their spot was taken by the Cleveland Crusaders. The loss of the Broncos forced the Oilers to temporarily rebrand as the "Alberta Oilers" with plans to split games between Edmonton and Calgary — a plan that also never materialized. Calgary would wait until 1975 for WHA hockey with the Cowboys, and until 1980 for the NHL's Flames.
