Diehard Washington Commanders fans remember when Dave Butz and Darrell Green were the twin pillars of one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history. Butz was a 6-foot-8, 300-pound mountain of a man who anchored the interior of the defensive line for 14 seasons — a two-time Super Bowl champion whose immovable presence in the middle of the line made it nearly impossible for opposing teams to establish the run. He was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and famously told the crowd at the Super Bowl XXII victory parade, "We came, we saw, we kicked their Butz." Green was the fastest man in football, a seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback whose world-class speed and lockdown coverage ability allowed him to shut down the league's best receivers for an incredible 20 seasons. Together they were the heart of a defense that helped the franchise win Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XXII under head coach Joe Gibbs. Butz and Green are both enshrined in the franchise's Ring of Fame as all-time greats.
