Diehard Chicago White Sox fans will never forget the magic of 2005, when Mark Buehrle and Paul Konerko led the South Side to its first World Series championship in 88 years. Konerko was the captain — a six-time All-Star first baseman who crushed 40 home runs during the regular season and then launched a go-ahead grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series that still gives Sox fans chills. Buehrle was the workhorse lefty who pitched a complete game in the ALCS, then came back to earn the save in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, becoming the first pitcher in World Series history to start and save consecutive games. That 2005 squad went 11-1 in the playoffs behind a pitching staff that threw four consecutive complete games in the ALCS — something we'll probably never see again. The White Sox swept the Astros in four games, and Konerko caught the final out in every series-clinching victory. Buehrle's number 56 now sits retired at the ballpark on the South Side, and his statue stands on the right field concourse.
