The 1975 Vulcans competed gamely in a league that was crumbling around them, and Birmingham was one of the markets that actually showed promise for professional football — so much so that the city applied for an NFL expansion franchise after the WFL's collapse. The NFL ultimately didn't act on the application, but Birmingham's passion for the game was undeniable.
